Predicting the possible future by using Chinese Fortune Teller Paper was a common pastime throughout the grade school days. Also known as “cootie catchers,” such the toys could reveal who liked/hated you, if you would be rich some day, and even which score you gained. Want to make a DIY fortune teller origami? Grab a piece of paper and take action! It is easy to realize that the fun of playing with the paper toy does not diminish just because you are not in school anymore!
Rules for using Chinese Fortune Teller Origami
The first step of making Chinese fortune teller origami is to create a square piece of paper by folding the left bottom corner over to the opposite side of the paper. Cut the redundant excess off. Opening the folded sheet, and you’ll have a square of paper as expectation. Then, repeat refolding the paper by folding the right bottom corner over to the left top corner. Reopen the paper to its square shape. You end up 2 crease marks, which run from corner to corner.
Second, fold one corner of the square to the center of the paper. Repeat this step for other remaining corners until you end up a smaller square of paper with 4 flaps. Turn the paper over and then fold each corner into the middle again so that an even smaller square with 4 flaps is also created.
Third, turn the paper over so that the 4 square flaps are now facing up. After that, fold the paper in half along the open flap lines with the aim of creating creases. Such the creases form a plus sign as you’re now folding from side to side, not corner to corner. Hold the Chinese folding paper and open it up for the test drive. The only way to open is to use your index fingers and thumbs of both hands under the square flaps. Slowly bring the fingers together and the toy will open.
Write 4 colors on the top, square flaps. Then, choose colors with different numbers of letters in the word, i.e. blue (3), red (4), orange (5), green (6). Those flaps may be decorated to match their respective colors. Flip the paper over and write 8 numbers on the triangular flaps. Next, raise the triangular flaps and write 1 fortune under each 1/2 triangle. These fortunes vary, based on the age of the person that makes the Chinese Fortune Teller Paper. For instance, “you will be rich,” “someone will call you today,” “you will have 10 kids.” How to play? Pay attention to the information!
